My iPod nano will not charge, or show up in iTunes.?

I open iTunes, then plug my iPod nano in. An apple appears on the iPod then the iPod will turn on and say it's connected for about 3 seconds, then turn black and the apple reappears. It isn't showing up in iTunes.
