How does Ariel trade her voice for a pair of legs?

pancake got most of it right. If she doesn't kiss Eric (the prince) by the time the sun sets on the third day Ariel will belong to Ursula. She doesn't get stuck on land. Ursula also uses a potion to exchange the voice for the legs.
