I need an American to explain this to me?

The U.S. presidential election is not decided by simple national popular vote. Instead, each state is alotted a certain number of electoral college votes based on their respective populations. If a candidate wins a particular state, then he wins the electoral votes ociated with that state. First candidate to win enough states to reach 270 electoral votes wins the election.
